Is Your Siding Ready for Winter?

Is Your Siding Ready for Winter?Prepare your siding for winter weather!

With Fall all but over, we’ve reached that time of the year when temperature drops and that means that Winter is right around the corner. Even though winters in the Seattle and King County area may not be as extreme as in other parts of the country, that doesn’t mean that the weather can be any less harsh on the exterior of our homes. Siding does more than just bring curb appeal. It protects the outside of your home from the weather and elements and it keeps the inside cozy and warm. The effectiveness of your Seattle siding depends on its current condition and if it’s been properly maintained, so here are a few things you need to know when it comes to exterior siding during the winter.

Does your siding need any repairs?
Depending on the material, siding can have a lifespan of anywhere from 15 years to 40 years. However, if the siding is damaged, it doesn’t matter if your siding is brand spanking new or if it was replaced a few years ago. Damaged siding is not going to be as durable or as reliable as non-durable siding and if it’s not replaced or repaired quickly, the damaged area could quickly get worse. The next time there’s freezing rain or a heavy snowfall it could allow moisture to seep behind the siding and end up causing mold and mildew growth, or leave your home susceptible to rot.

Is your siding clean and clear of debris?
You may not expect the cleanliness of your home’s siding to be a deciding factor in whether or not it can hold its own against the weather, but dirt and grime could also be hiding structural vulnerabilities. Old leaves that are stuck to the side of your house can cause mold growth which could weaken more than just the siding or it could attract insects that might find their way inside. To protect against this, use a broom to sweep away the dirt and debris. Vinyl siding is exceptionally durable and it can hold up to pressure washing to flush out particularly stubborn clumps of leaves.

Does your siding need sealant protectant?
If you have wood siding that is in excellent condition and undamaged, then you can repaint it before the cold hits. The paint will act as a sealant and will help protect your siding during the winter by acting as an extra barrier for the snow and ice.
