Serving Yakima County, WA
Builders Service Company works across Yakima County, from the city of Yakima up the valley to Selah. Two cities in the county have their own service pages, and our Yakima page also covers Union Gap. In each of them we replace siding, install roofing, put in new windows and build decks. Below you can see how the housing and climate compare between these cities, so you know what tends to come up on homes like yours before we visit.
How homes differ across Yakima County
Yakima is the county’s largest housing market by far, with 37,467 housing units, and its homes are older. Its median year built is 1972, and the 1950–79 era dominates. Houses from that era often still carry cedar, T1-11 or asbestos-cement shingle siding. Asbestos-cement shingles may contain asbestos and should be tested before removal.
Selah is much smaller, with 3,489 housing units, and newer. Its median home was built in 1990, and the 1980–99 era dominates. That was the era of composite and hardboard siding, including LP siding, which has a known history of moisture failure, so we check those walls closely for swelling and soft spots.
Both cities sit in the East Cascades valley climate region, with hot, dry summers and high UV. Yakima also has cold winters, which brings freeze-thaw cycles and snow on the roof into the picture. Strong sun means fading is the main wear we see on exterior finishes in both places.
Wildfire exposure is where the two cities part ways: Yakima is rated High and Selah is rated Elevated. For homes with higher exposure, we usually suggest the Evergreen Shield Siding System, which carries a Class A fire rating, or metal siding.

Yakima County FAQ
Which communities in Yakima County do you serve?
We serve Yakima, Selah and Union Gap. Yakima and Selah each have their own page with local details, and Union Gap is covered by our Yakima page. If your home is elsewhere in the county, call toll free at 888-980-8580 and we will tell you whether we can schedule a free in-home consultation at your address.
What does the East Cascades valley climate mean for my siding?
It means sun and temperature swings matter more than anything else. Yakima and Selah both sit in the East Cascades valley climate region, with hot, dry summers and high UV, and Yakima adds cold winters. Fading and freeze-thaw are what we look at first. The Evergreen Shield Siding System comes in 20 built-in colors that resist fading, chipping and peeling, so there is no repainting.
Does wildfire exposure differ between Yakima and Selah?
Yes. Yakima's wildfire exposure is rated High and Selah's is rated Elevated. Either is a reason to think about fire resistance when you replace siding. The Evergreen Shield Siding System has a Class A fire rating, the highest fire-resistance rating for construction materials, and metal siding is another type we usually recommend. We go over the best option for your home during the free in-home consultation.
Should older homes in Yakima be tested for asbestos before re-siding?
Some should. The 1950–79 era is the most common in Yakima, where the median year built is 1972, and siding from those years can include asbestos-cement shingles. Those shingles may contain asbestos and should be tested before removal. Whatever is on your walls today, we replace it with vinyl, metal or the Evergreen Shield Siding System, and talk through the best fit during the free in-home consultation.
