How homes differ across Grays Harbor County
The three cities share a Pacific coast climate and a Low wildfire rating. What sets them apart is the age of the houses and the kind of weather each one takes.
Aberdeen has the oldest homes of the group. Its median home was built in 1948, and the most common era is before 1950. Very high rainfall and winter storms are the local conditions that stand out. Older wood siding that has taken years of wet, stormy winters often shows moss and rot.
Ocean Shores is the newest. Its median year built is 1997, and most homes date from 2000 or later. Here the conditions are salt spray and wind-driven rain rather than age. Salt air calls for corrosion-resistant fasteners and flashing on any exterior project.
Montesano falls between them. Its median year built is 1973, and most homes were built from 1950 to 1979. Like Aberdeen, it gets very high rainfall and has older housing. Houses from that era often carry cedar, T1-11 or asbestos-cement shingle siding, and the shingles may contain asbestos and should be tested before removal.

Grays Harbor County FAQ
Which Grays Harbor County cities do you cover?
We have pages for three cities in Grays Harbor County: Aberdeen, Ocean Shores and Montesano. Homeowners in Elma are covered through our Montesano page. If you live somewhere else in the county, call our Tacoma office at 253-777-0866 and we can tell you whether we work at your address and set up a free in-home consultation.
How do conditions in Ocean Shores differ from Aberdeen and Montesano?
The biggest difference is salt. Ocean Shores homes face salt spray and wind-driven rain, so we plan corrosion-resistant fasteners and flashing and finishes rated for marine exposure. Aberdeen and Montesano deal more with very high rainfall, and Aberdeen with winter storms as well. There the focus shifts to moss, rot, rainscreen detailing and gutter and roof-edge maintenance.
Do older homes in Aberdeen and Montesano need extra preparation?
Often they do. Most Aberdeen homes were built before 1950, so they likely have original wood lap siding and possibly lead paint, which calls for careful removal. Montesano homes mostly date from 1950 to 1979, and asbestos-cement shingle siding from that era may contain asbestos and should be tested before removal. We look for these during the free in-home consultation.
Is wildfire a concern for homes in Grays Harbor County?
Not much: Aberdeen, Ocean Shores and Montesano all carry a Low wildfire rating, so water and wind matter more than fire when you plan exterior work here. On the coast that means salt spray and wind-driven rain; in Aberdeen and Montesano it means very high rainfall. We check how your current siding, roof and windows are holding up during the free in-home consultation.
